MMAE 443: Design of Mechanical Systems

We are a team of Mechanical Engineering seniors at the Illinois Institute of Technology dedicated to designing and developing innovative engineering solutions to real-world problems. Through our capstone project experience, we aim to combine creativity, technical knowledge, and hands-on design to build systems that improve everyday life.

Our team is driven by a shared passion for innovation, problem-solving, and engineering design. We work collaboratively to transform ideas into functional prototypes, applying principles from mechanics, electronics, and systems design.

We strive to innovate one project at a time—pushing the boundaries of what is possible through engineering, teamwork, and continuous learning.

our Projects

Our work focuses on designing and developing mechanical systems that address real-world engineering challenges. Each project combines theory, simulation, and prototyping to create functional and innovative solutions through collaborative design.

The Sketch Model Challenge involved the design, construction, and testing of a lightweight racing vehicle and projectile launcher using primarily paper-based materials. Teams were required to optimize structural efficiency under strict material constraints, where non-paper components were heavily penalized in weight calculations.

The objective was to build a vehicle capable of safely supporting a rider while maintaining structural integrity under dynamic racing conditions. Vehicle performance in the race was directly influenced by total weight, incentivizing lightweight and efficient design solutions.

The final project focuses on the design and development of a mechanical system aimed at improving driver visibility and safety by dynamically reducing solar glare inside a vehicle. The system integrates sun-position tracking with a mechanically actuated light-filtering mechanism that adjusts in real time based on environmental lighting conditions.

The goal of the project is to create an adaptive solution that enhances driving comfort and safety while overcoming the limitations of traditional static visors and legally restricted windshield tinting. The design incorporates principles of mechanical systems, sensors, and controls to achieve responsive and efficient operation.
